Charles “Fred” Hale comes to Brighton on the sale of anonymity distribute maps to a competition of newspapers (this is a variant of “Lobby Lud” in the name of the person who was is “Kolley Kibber”). Antihero of the novel, Pinkie Brown, is a sociopathic gangster teen up-and-coming. Hale had betrayed the former leader of the little band of control now. Ida Arnold, a woman of heart and decent, is introduced into the action by a chance encounter with Hale feared that the murders of the little finger in mysterious circumstances soon after. Pinkie tries to cover his tracks lead to a string of crimes, and an unhappy marriage with Rose, a waitress who has the power to destroy his alibi.
